Inside Frank Sinatra’s Jaw-Dropping $9 Million California Beach House
Though Frank Sinatra’s cover of “(Theme From) New York, New York” links him inextricably to the Big Apple, the singer spent much of his time in California. He owned more than one home in the state. In 1976, he married his fourth wife, Barbara Sinatra, and the two commissioned an expansive beach house in Malibu. Years later, Mindy Kaling purchased the oceanfront estate.
Frank Sinatra and Barbara Sinatra married in 1976
In 1976, Sinatra married for the fourth and final time. It was also Barbara Sinatra’s third and final marriage. Though his children were not happy with the nuptials, Sinatra was determined to make the marriage work. They married in Palm Springs, California.
“We all thought, when she was going to marry [Frank], ‘Oh, Christ, she has too much class,’” Sinatra’s friend Chuck Scardina told the Desert Sun. “She had more class than anybody I knew.”
Still, the pair had a happy wedding ceremony.
“Frank led [Barbara] outside by the hand and revealed his wedding gift to her,” Scardina said. “It was a deep blue Rolls Royce which some guests told me had cost $100,000. Barbara gasped. Frank said he chose the color to match her eyes. Already installed on the Rolls were the new license plates BAS-1 [Barbara Ann Sinatra]. Then Barbara surprised Frank: she had bought him a new, dark gray Jaguar.”
Inside the couple’s Malibu beach house
In 1990, the Sinatras built a seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom estate in Malibu. The expansive home played host to a number of Sinatra’s friends, including Dick Van Dyke, Gregory Peck, and Jack Lemmon.
Per the LA Times, the home has an open floor plan, with a wet bar on the first floor that is accessible from both the inside and outside. On the second floor, which is accessible by elevator, there is a suite with two bathrooms, a steam room, a hair salon, and a lounge. High reaching windows provide an expansive view of the ocean and beachfront outside.
The home’s many outdoor spaces include a terrace off the suite, a plunge pool, and a large patio that overlooks the ocean. The couple also renewed their vows here in 1996.
In 2020, years after Sinatra’s 1998 death, comedian and actor Mindy Kaling purchased the home for $9.55 million.
Frank Sinatra owned more than one home in California
The expansive beach house was not the only property that Sinatra owned in the state of California. Per the New York Post, Sinatra also had his Twin Palms home in Palm Springs, which he purchased with his first wife Nancy in 1947. He only owned this home for six years, selling it shortly after his divorce from Ava Gardner.
Sinatra commissioned a desert home in Palm Desert that he used as a retreat for himself and his friends while married to Mia Farrow.
He also owned a private compound in Rancho Mirage, which was his primary residence from 1954 to 1995.
“It was a place of the happiest times we ever had with him,” his daughter Tina told Architectural Digest. “That was his home, and you could feel it. It was full of great times, I met the world in that house.”
